A Nod To Black History Month

black history month.jpg

I read this article the other day in the AJC. And because I LOVE quotes it stood out to me.

The article begins with a quote from past president Gerald Ford. It was 1976 and he was reflecting on this newly federally recognized holiday and called for all Americans to "seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history."

It's always interesting to me that we have a month designated to celebrate Black History. Black History is rich and full of amazing stories, heralded and celebrated inventors and significant contributions that helped build the fabric of our country. Why just celebrate it for one month out of the year? Why not embrace this bountiful history that is indeed so integral to all we know and love every day? It seems a bit limiting to me, so while I acknowledge and am grateful for the month of February and the acknowledgment, I strive to celebrate it as a part of my daily journey!

I am sharing the following 8 quotes from some of our most notable historic black heros and heroines. Enjoy!

1.     "Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and it never will." Frederick Douglass

2.       “... history has shown us that courage can be contagious and hope can take on a life of its own.”

Michelle Obama

3.       “I have learned over the years that when one's mind is made up, this diminishes fear; knowing what must be done does away with fear.”

Rosa Parks

4.       “Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world.”

Harriet Tubman

5.       “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.”

Martin Luther King, Jr.

6.       “The best way to make dreams come true is to wake up.”

Mae C. Jemison

7.       “Love recognizes no barriers. It jumps hurdles, leaps fences, penetrates walls to arrive at its destination full of hope.”

Maya Angelou

8.       “Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today.”

Malcolm X
